Abstract
U ovom završnom radu predstavljeno je otkriće Kristiana Birkelanda o povezanosti polarne svjetlosti na Zemlji s elektromagnetskim olujama na Suncu. Dan je kratak životopis Kristiana Birkelanda te je opisano njegovo sustavno prikupljanje podataka o aurori i geomagnetskim olujama. Prikazan je niz Birkelandovih laboratorijskih simulacija s magnetiziranom terrellom. Ovo pionirsko istraživanje Kristiana Birkelanda dovelo ga je do zaključka da je permanentan tok energiziranih negativnih i pozitivnih čestica sa Sunca ključni uzročnik polarne svjetlosti te da Sunce pogoni i strujni krug odgovoran za geomagnetske poremećaje. Dok je ovo otkriće u prvo vrijeme izazivalo nevjericu, danas ga se prepoznaje kao golem doprinos Kristiana Birkelanda svemirskoj znanosti.
Abstract (english)
This final paper presents Christian Birkeland´s recognition of the physical connections between the polar lights on Earth and electromagnetic storms from the Sun. A short biography of Christian Birkeland is presented. His acquisition of systematic information about the aurora and geomagnetic disturbances is described. Birkeland´s sequence of laboratory simulations with magnetized terrella is presented. Kristian Birkeland´s pioneering research led to the conclusion that the permanent flow of energised negative and positive charges coming from the Sun is a key cause of polar lights and that the Sun also drives the circuit responsible for magnetic disturbances. While this discovery initially caused disbelief, today we recognize Kristian Birkeland´s enormous contribution to space science.
